Paint Job Estimating - Getting Higher Prices - Make More Money

Lots of contractors believe that the only way to win a job is to cut the price of their estimate. They mistakenly think that the customer's only consideration used to qualify our bids is the lowest price. I do not sell my jobs on prices. And I believe that painters who sell on price are hurting themselves. Perceived value is a more important indicator than price.

The way to get a better price for your estimate is to give more value. I offer, as part of the job, to colorize my customer's painting project in a digital photo that has been colorized in any one of the many paint manufacturer's color preview program. I use is Benjamin Moore's Color Preview. Only after I have signed a contract, I take a digital photo of the project, enter it to the Color Preview program on your pc, and then show pictures of the different color schemes that your customer would like to see.

Customers are generally excited when you suggest that if they buy the paint job from me, that I can show different colors of their job with the click of the mouse. I tell them that it is a lot cheaper and easier to see that project, with the color choices they might like, in a digital photo than it is to paint that project and not like the result. This adds value to my estimate.

Sometimes I print the results and give them the report or album in clear folder, but the way that seems to work best is to email the results as a .jpeg. If you reduce the file size before mailing you can send quite a few of these as attachments.

Learning the software and to use this as a selling tool is quite easy once. I suggest that you do it on a few of your own pictures before using it. Once you establish the color area, you can then change colors in those areas rapidly and easily. You worry that you might get caught in a long process of thousands of color choices, it has not happened to me because, I always tell them to start with some serious choices because I need to start somewhere. I had one where the owner tried out about ten schemes with different colors for the shutter, the siding and the front door, but as I said once the areas are defined all you need do is click on a color in one of the charts and bingo, then email. This is a nice way to provide extra value for your bid, and thus allowing you to charge more for your jobs.

When you sell this kind of added value, it shows that you are more of a thinking person and more the expert. Thus making you stand out above the other bids. Think value and not price when selling your jobs and this will enable you to sell at higher prices.
